AB OBJECTIVES: Localization of Kaposi's sarcomas in AIDS patients, their
stage (CDC classification) and immunological status at the time of
diagnosis. METHODS: 89 patients with AIDS-Kaposi (out of 246 AIDS
patients), hospitalized in the A. Sygros Hospital during the 1988-1993
period, were studied. Eighty seven of our patients were homosexuals and
the Kaposi's sarcoma led to the AIDS diagnosis for 28 of them, while it
was the first evidence of the disease for 47 patients. The localization
of Kaposis', the stage according to CDC classification and the CD4
number, the time the diagnosis had been set were recorded. RESULTS: The
first localization of the Kaposis' was on the lower limbs (28.08%), the
face (16.85%) the trunk (14.60%) and the upper limbs (12.35%). Visceral
involvement (lungs, etc.,) occurred in 10.11% and appeared later in the
course of the disease. The number of Kaposis' was under 10 for the
60.67% of the patients. The patients' CDC stage varied: 52.8%, were
classified as stage II & III, 10.11% as stage IVA 3.37% as stage IVB,
11.23% as stage IVC1, and 13.48% as stage IVC2. The CD4 count was low in
the majority of the patients: CD4 < 200 for the 71.42% of the patients.
DISCUSSION: Kaposi's sarcoma appeared in our study mostly in homosexual
men. The first localization of them was on the lower limbs. The CD4
count was usually low while the patients' stage according to CDC was
variable. The results are compared to the findings of the literature.
